TRIBUTE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
                                                                                               Matthew 16:24

Jesus made this statement on His way to the cross. In it He reminded us that anyone who wants to follow Him must be willing to give up personal comfort and accept a life of suffering for His righteousness. Not every Christian is called to suffer physical death for their faith. On January 15th we celebrated the birthday of a great man who gave up his life for his faith.

Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and ministry for civil rights and social justice is a great testimony to what God can do when we are committed to Him. God used Dr. King’s suffering and death to change the course of human history. Many of the civil rights and privileges that we presently enjoy today came as a result of his personal sacrifice of cross bearing.

We thank God for sending Dr. King our way. We regret the tragedy of his violent death, but even in his death we gained some freedoms that we presently enjoy.

A part of our tribute to Dr. King’s legacy should be our continuing commitment to follow Christ in true self-denial and cross-bearing. Just maybe God will use us to free others from the bondage of sin with the saving message of Jesus Christ.
