SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
THE GRACE I NEED Dr. Craig A. Cooper
Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. Psalm 68:19
God in His wisdom keeps us dependent on Him daily, and daily I He upholds us. “Blessed be the Lord who daily bears us up.” True, someone may receive an inheritance or sell a company with a massive financial payout, but God does not give fifty years of mercy in one lump sum. Otherwise, we would fixate our joy on the gifts and not the Giver.
Instead, His mercies are “new every morning,” so great is His faithfulness (Lam. 3:23). The Christian life is a life of daily dependence. Jesus teaches us to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” He adds that we needn’t be anxious about the day after this one, for that will take care of itself. And anyway, “sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt: 6:33-34).
So the grace I need comes as I need the grace. My need is to be daily borne up, strengthened, supported, enabled, helped, upheld, empowered, and given grace from God above. That’s how dependent I am, and how mercifully generous He is. With the right mindset intact, this is an exciting way to live, ever looking to the Lord for day-by-day provision.
It is both humbling and hopeful. Each night, we can rest our weary heads on a pillow of mercy, recounting all the specific ways the Lord has borne us up that day. As we look ahead to future days, let’s resist the temptation to be overwhelmed with a sense of our inadequacy and remind ourselves instead that the Lord will daily bear us up. As the need arises, our prayers will also ascend, and the provision will appear.
Jesus reminds us to stay close. “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5).
